Backgrounder
Canada is a vast country with a myriad of bird, mammal, reptile,
amphibian, and insect species. Scientists can't possibly keep
track of each and every wildlife population, and it takes
a huge amount of time and effort to gather all the information
needed to protect them.
- Many conservation organizations rely on the assistance
of Canadians from coast to coast to determine the state
of our wildlife species. Data collected from far and wide
help scientists determine which species and ecosystems are
in trouble, find ways to conserve them, or prevent them
from getting in trouble in the first place.
- You can do your part by participating in a wildlife survey.
Getting involved is fun and rewarding. It means spending
time outside and learning how to identify different species.
You'll be observing wildlife in its native habitat and –
who knows, you might even make a great scientific discovery!
- The Canadian Wildlife Federation has put together this
directory of surveys so you can choose one that's right
for you and contact the organization in charge. The choice
is yours. Now, get out and do your part for Canada's wonderful,
irreplaceable wildlife!
