Project WILD
Overview
Eighty-five thousand Canadian educators can't be wrong. They
all participate in Project WILD. Teachers, parents, and students
praise this popular conservation education program. Project
WILD teachers have instructed millions of Canadian students,
from kindergarten through high school. Now in its 15th successful
year, Project WILD is a model for WILD Education programs
and is brought to you under agreement with the
U.S. Council for Environmental Education.
- It's based on the premise that young Canadians have a
vital interest in learning about their natural world, how
their actions affect the sustainability of life on our planet,
and how they can become responsible inhabitants of the Earth.
- It assists learners in developing the awareness, knowledge,
skills, and commitment needed to make informed decisions
and to take constructive action for wildlife, habitat, and
the environment.
- Project WILD is designed to be infused into mandated curriculum
subjects, such as art, health, language arts, math, music,
physical education, science, and social studies.
- Appropriate for use by classroom teachers, Project WILD
is also in the repertoire of nonformal educators, including
resource specialists, naturalists, conservation officers,
camp counsellors, and leaders of scouts and guides.
- It features a substantial collection of hands-on, pedagogically
sound activities in the form of an activity guide. This
volume is thematically organized into seven sections based
upon a conceptual framework: Awareness and Appreciation;
Diversity of Wildlife Values; Ecological Principles; Management
and Conservation; People, Culture, and Wildlife; Trends,
Issues, and Consequences; and Responsible Human Actions.
- Each Project WILD activity contains all information needed
for successful completion, including objectives, method,
background, a list of required materials, procedures, evaluation
suggestions, recommended grade levels, subjects, skills,
duration, group size, setting, and key vocabulary.
- Project WILD offers workshops
designed to inform educators about the program's philosophy
and to show them how to integrate Project WILD activities
into existing curricula.
- Materials and workshops are delivered by a network of
provincial and territorial coordinators and leaders.
How to Participate in a
Project WILD Workshop and Receive Your Activity Guide
- Project WILD is offered through six-to eight-hour training
sessions by workshop leaders.
- These lively and engaging sessions include a program overview,
participation in Project WILD activities, information about
wildlife conservation, and plans for using Project WILD
with a wide range of students.
- Participants become familiar with Project WILD materials,
activities, and strategies. They gain the experience needed
to use Project WILD with youth and to integrate program
materials and activities into their own teaching or to make
them the basis for a whole course of study.
- Educators receive a Project WILD Activity Guide.
This K–12 resource is not for sale and is only available
