A Sea of Opportunities

Welcome, teachers, youth leaders, and other ocean educators! If you share our vision of a "bluer," more ocean-friendly, world, then this online educational module is for you. The inspiration for this Canadian Wildlife Federation initiative is Oceans Day, June 8.

Since its launch in 1992 at the UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, this annual celebration of our seas has been raising awareness around the world about the life-giving role of oceans and global concerns about their health. The theme of this year's celebration — "Oceans . . . Closer Than You Think" — reminds us that our planet's aquatic bodies, both fresh and salt water, are linked together in one vast, flowing web. We often forget how closely connected we are with the sea. (See Nowhere Near an Ocean?)

This Ocean Education unit offers young Canadians, from coast to coast, a whole new sea of opportunities to make the Earth a bluer planet, including:

  • a chance to discover how the sea supports us in our daily lives, no matter how far we may live from a coast;
  • an occasion to learn how our everyday actions can help or harm oceans near and far;
  • an opportunity to mend our ways, to act responsibly and become better caretakers of our seas; and
  • a chance to celebrate the beauty, diversity, and life-sustaining power of oceans.

There will never be a better opportunity to share in and help fulfil this vision of a bluer world than Oceans Day. And what better place to start than with the classroom activities and action projects in this online unit.
