National Wildlife Week Awards
Recognizing excellence has always been an important component
of CWF's National Wildlife Week (NWW) celebrations. Each
year, the Federation acknowledges the efforts of students,
teachers, and parents who create, conserve, and enhance habitat
for wildlife.
The top award for 2003 went to Saugeen District Secondary
School in Port Elgin, Ontario, for its “Heritage Garden Project.” Teachers
Nancie Darlington-Smit, Jan Sinclair, and Jonna Ebel guided
students from grade nine through OAC in an ambitious plan
to naturalize their school grounds, enhance local biodiversity,
and demonstrate the value of ecological restoration.
The secondary level runner-up was John Barsby Community
Secondary School in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Students planted
native trees and shrubs and put bird boxes and feeders on
school grounds. The elementary level winner was South Shore
Elementary School in Regina Beach, Saskatchewan. Students
there planted native trees and shrubs, created a circulating
stream, and put up bird boxes.
Honourable mentions went to Canwood School, Canwood, Saskatchewan;
Ellerslie Elementary-Junior High School, Edmonton, Alberta;
Fessenden School, Ancaster, Ontario; Gunningsville Elementary
School, Riverview, New Brunswick; George V Elementary School,
Winnipeg, Manitoba; St. Andrews Consolidated School, St. Andrews,
