Hinterland Who's Who Returns to Canadian Television

From the Atlantic Puffin and the Arctic Fox to the Whooping Crane and the Woodchuck, Hinterland Who's Who has been bringing Canadians closer to our wilderness heritage for more than 40 years.

Created in the early 1960s using the new medium of television, and introduced by the haunting flute melody familiar to millions, the Hinterland Who's Who series of wildlife announcements has been re-launched with a message for Canadians about the importance of wildlife and their habitat.

Increasingly, Canadians want not only to learn about nature, but also to understand how each of us can play a part in preserving it. The collaboration between the Canadian Wildlife Federation and Environment Canada's Canadian Wildlife Service brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the rejuvenated Hinterland Who's Who, and plays an important role in showing Canadians how to take action to protect nature.

“Our goal is to encourage Canadians to take action,” said Colin Maxwell, Executive Vice President of the Canadian Wildlife Federation. “Each of us can make a difference when it comes to preserving our natural heritage.” The new Hinterland Who's Who program also an abundance of resources to educators and the public at large through the new Web site The public service announcements and the Web site will serve to maintain the link millions of viewers made with wildlife through the original series and, by expressing the importance of protecting our natural legacy, help to ensure that wildlife continues to be an essential part of what it means to be Canadian.

Watch for the first four public service announcements: the Polar Bear, Common Loon, Leatherback Seaturtle and Monarch Butterfly. If you want to find out more about this exciting program, visit the Web site at www.hww.ca or www.ffdp.ca (french).
